The following are key points from the data in the tables and graphs found on the “Data” tab. The “Sources and Notes” tab provides additional information about the data.
- The 2003 Primary Prevention, Awareness, Attitude and Use Survey (PPAAUS) found that high school youth in Franklin County are less likely than in previous years to use alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.
- Regular use of both alcohol and tobacco by Franklin County students in grades 7–12 declined steadily in all grades from 1997 to 2006.
- Marijuana use among most Franklin County high school youth declined from 1997 to 2003. Despite this gain, 18.2% of high school juniors and 20.9% of high school seniors reported smoking marijuana at least monthly in 2003. Levels of cocaine use among these students remained fairly consistent across survey years, although cocaine use was reported by fewer than one-tenth as many students as marijuana use.
- The percentage of Franklin County youth in grades 9 through 12 who reported using “designer drugs” once a month or more increased from 1997 to 2000, then decreased from 2000 to 2003.
