The following are key points from the data in the tables and graphs found on the “Data” tab. The “Sources and Notes” tab provides additional information about the data

  • In 2005-2007, the leading causes of death in Franklin County (age-adjusted) were heart disease (204.5 per 100,000 population), cancer (200.4 per 100,000), chronic lower respiratory disease (CLRD; 54.7 per 100,000), stroke (48.4 per 100,000) and accidents (38.4 per 100,000).
  • From 2005–2007, the death rates for cancer, CLRD and stroke were higher for Franklin County residents than for the state of Ohio or the U.S.
  • Death rates for heart disease, cancer and stroke declined from 1999–2001 to 2005–2007 for both Franklin County and the state of Ohio. Deaths due to accidents increased, rising from a rate of 25.3 to 38.4 per 100,000 for Franklin County and from 30.6 to 39.1 per 100,000 for the state. The rate of deaths due to CLRD remained nearly constant for both Franklin County and Ohio.
