The following are key points from the data in the tables and graphs found on the “Data” tab. The “Sources and Notes” tab provides additional information about the data.

  • The city of Columbus represented 41% of all housing units added to the Franklin County housing stock between 2007 and 2008, even though the city had 51% of all units in the county in 2007.
  • In 2007, the vacancy rate among all housing units was 14.9% within Columbus, compared to 13.4% in Franklin County overall. Vacancy rates fell from 2007 in Columbus, when they were 15.2%, and remained constant in Franklin County.
  • In 2008, 77.4% of the county’s vacant units were in Columbus.
  • Among occupied units, the percentage that was owner-occupied in 2008 was 50.0% in Columbus versus 58.5% in Franklin County. These rates were lower than in 2007, when they were 51.9% and 59.5% respectively. 
  • The number of owner-occupied units in Columbus increased by 2.6% while it increased by just 1.3% in Franklin County between 2006 and 2007.
  • Homeownership rates in Franklin County municipalities ranged from 45.4% (Whitehall) to 84.1% (Worthington) in 2000. Columbus had the second lowest rate in the county at 49.1%.
