The following are key points from the data in the tables and graphs found on the “Data” tab. The “Sources and Notes” tab provides additional information about the data.

  • In 2008, married-couple families with children were 18.4% of all Franklin County households and 14.8% of all Columbus households.  Between 2003 and 2008, this type of household decreased in both the county and the city.
  • In 2008, householders living alone made up 32.6% of all Franklin County households and 36.1% of all Columbus households, with a significant increase since 2002 (14.6%) in the number of Columbus householders age 65 years and over who were living alone.
  • Between 2003 and 2008, the number of female- headed households with children increased in both Franklin County (5.7%) and Columbus (7.9%). In 2008, this type of household was 13.5% of all Franklin County households and 15.6% of all Columbus households.
  • The average household size in Columbus decreased to 2.32 in 2008 after increasing in the previous year in 2007.  Franklin County remain constrant with 2.43 persons per household in 2007 and 2008.  Average household size in Ohio (2.48 in 2008) and the nation (2.62 in 2008) have remained relatively constant in recent years.
