The following are key points from the data in the tables and graphs found on the “Data” tab. The “Sources and Notes” tab provides additional information about the data.
- Racial and ethnic diversity is increasing in Franklin County. Between 2000 and 2008, the white population increased by just 2.1% while other racial groups grew at substantially higher rates. The black population increased by 14.2%, the Asian/Pacific Islander population by 34.5%, and the Hispanic/Latino population by 87.1%. The bi-racial/multi-racial population decreased during the same period by 17.4%.
- In 2008, 72.9% of the Franklin County population was white and 19.3% was black. Despite strong growth in recent years, the Asian and Hispanic populations represented only 4.0% and 4.0% of the total county population in 2007.
- In 2008, 8.5% of the Franklin County residents (96,146 persons) were foreign-born. Among the county’s foreign-born population, 36.9% were born in Asia, 23.5% were born in Latin America, 24.7% were born in Africa, and 11.7% were born in Europe.
