The following are key points from the data in the tables and graphs found on the “Data” tab. The “Sources and Notes” tab provides additional information about the data.
  • In 2009, total admissions to the Juvenile Detention Center were down 54.8% to 3,976 from a peak in 1997 of 5,428.  There has been a decrease in admissions to JDC for both felony crimes and misdemeanors over the past decade, although felony-based admissions were on the rise from 2003 to 2007.
  • Teen Court, a diversion program for first-time misdemeanor offenders, received 1,308 referrals from 2007-2009, with 1,044 successful cases, 241 unsuccessful cases, 3 neutral cases, and 20 youth offenders who are still actively in the program. When looking at a sample of 100 referrals in 2007, 23 have had new criminal charges, 8 have had new traffic charges, and 2 have had both new criminal and traffic charges.
